On June 9th, Jupiter moved out of Gemini and into Cancer. It went from air to water. It went from a sign concerned with thinking and speaking to one concerned with feeling.

Jupiter is the planet that is associated with growth and expansion. When Jupiter moves into a zodiac sign, the themes associated with that sign get amplified. Which makes sense, because Jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system. According to NASA, you could fit 1,000 Earths inside of Jupiter. So in terms of planetary archetypes, Jupiter makes things bigger. It’s more, more, more.
In Gemini, the sign associated with rapid communication and ideas, we saw Jupiter’s expansive nature manifest as so much news at a breakneck pace. How many times in the past year has it felt like there was just way too much happening, too much news, too many ideas, too much discourse, too much chatter? Jupiter in Gemini played a big part in that.
Now, Jupiter will be in Cancer for about a year. It’s definitely a different vibe. Cancer is a cardinal sign, so it’s not slow and steady; things will still move. But the enveloping nature of Cancer means that the growth we see will be protective and rooted in emotions and a desire to nurture.
Jupiter is considered a benefic planet in astrology, which basically means it is generally positive. Interpretations associate it with luck and success. In natal charts, in whatever part of your chart Jupiter is in, it usually means that you are blessed in that area and that those themes in life are a little easier for you than they may be for most people. Example: my sister has Jupiter in the 2nd house of money and resources in her birth chart. She gets refunds she doesn’t even ask for. She once got a total refund for a flight that she missed because she overslept, and I think they even rebooked her for free!
Not only is Jupiter a benefic planet, but it’s also exalted in Cancer, which means that when it’s in Cancer, it can make the most of its power. Jupiter looooves Cancer. When Jupiter moves into Cancer, it’s like the beloved friend or child who comes home to stay briefly after living away for a long time; it’s the houseguest who lights everything up and excites everyone through its presence. It’s the prodigal daughter coming home for Christmas.
Because of its benefic nature and it being in a sign that it excels in, a lot of astrologers have been heralding this transit. Especially since Mars was retrograde and spent a lot of time in Cancer in late 2024/early 2025, the part of our birth charts with Cancer has been begging for some positive vibes. So if there are themes in your life with which you were really struggling over the last 7 months or so, you’ll likely get some relief with those over the next year. For me, this is my first house, the house of self, of identity, of my body and my spirit, so I am ready. Please, Jupiter, give me a fucking break.
Extra interesting tidbit: if you have a “day chart,” meaning you were born with the sun above the horizon (i.e., while the sun was up), Jupiter is your primary benefic, so you get an extra little boost from Jupiter in your chart. (People with “night charts” get the same kind of boost from Venus.) If you aren’t sure what kind of chart you have and would like an in-depth analysis and an overview of how this Jupiter transit will affect you, book a reading with me!
So astrologers love Jupiter, and they really love Jupiter in Cancer. However, this transit does have the potential for some downsides. Cancer is the mothering the sign, and it’s fiercely loyal. Have you seen that gif of the crab wielding the knife? Cancerian.
Cancer is about our roots. This means that Cancer is also associated with nativism and nationalism, already in the zeitgeist big time, and with Jupiter moving into Cancer, we’ll see an even greater expansion of those themes, in the U.S. and in other countries. Feelings about our roots and efforts to protect our collective sense of home will be amplified over the next year. The “tourists go home” protests in Europe this summer are super Cancerian. Of course, the U.S. itself, if you use July 4th as its birth date, is a Cancer, so this constant examination of what America is and what being an American means is entrenched in its chart.
Let’s hope we see the best of Jupiter in Cancer over the next year. As I’m writing this, on the solstice (June 20th), the sun also moves into Cancer. It then aligns with Jupiter on June 24th, making that an especially auspicious day to take advantage of if you manifest or do any rituals. Light your abundance candle, Sonja! May Jupiter bring luck to us all.
